Noticed some black on this old Japanese Laurel, so I got out the loppers and realized the whole thing was dead right down to the trunk and pulled out quite easily. There were a ton of ants on the trunks I pulled up.

It has spread far with suckers and those stalks look healthy, but should I be concerned they may be affected? You can see some healthy-looking stalks right next to the place where I pulled up the main trunk.

Could this just be natural death from old age or something else? I never did anything to it. Just let it take over everything. There is a lilac tree right next to it that puts suckers up here and there.
