Rj, that is a very interesting dark green color on that semp. What time of the year does it show the red?

I just got it this year, so not really sure when its going to happen.

There is another in the series, Fire Quartz, but that one did not like my winter. I don't think it had a good chance to root before winter hit.

'Onyx' is 'Leopold'. You can type either name in and it will take you to the entry for 'Leopold'. It is a wonderful semp, unfortunately mine bloomed out this year.

I just got my second Super Semp 'Onyx' to replace one that melted in a week of 105+F temps. My 'Emerald' did fine in full sun. Is 'Onyx' extra-sensitive to heat?

Hi CalPolygardener. I think if you give it some protection until it adjusts to its new growing conditions, it should be okay during next summer's heat. When you get them, they are in a rather soft condition because of all the fertilizer and protected growing conditions at the nursery.
I had mine in full sun at 115 degrees here in the PNW and it did great in full sun.

Thanks Lynn. They came from a grower in Fallbrook which is cooler and more humid than Riverside so I shaded it and tried to keep it on the dry side. I guess I'll go sunnier and drier next year, emphasis on drier.

Only water in the cool of the early morning, or cool of the evening. Make sure the soil is very fast draining.
