There's been a lot of garden clean up going on here with other parts of the gardens and I haven't really been paying much attention to the daylilies, so when I was removing dead stalks from a salvia, I remembered that Tribal Council is just down the way. Decided to take a look and discovered five scapes, which is not really a surprise since it is usually the first to bloom. The surprise is that I have never posted a picture of it so I will use this one out of the data base. So now the 2021 season is under way here, Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Maybe in a couple of weeks there might be a bloom.

Sometimes I feel like the Scarecrow in The Wizard Of Oz--if I only had a brain! If I had used mine, I would have realized that Miss Victoria is also an early bloomer and can rival Tribal Council for first bloom honors. So I went out and looked, and sure enough, one plant has six scapes and the other one has two. Now, checking my list for 2020, the actual earliest bloomer was Stella's Sparky on April 6, so no daylily here in 2021 is going to match that. Tomorrow I must get out and see what S. Sparky is doing, I know it has put on new fans.

This is the first bloom of it last year as you can see from the date.

I did not have any pictures of Tribal Council because the weather was so bad, the blooms were ruined.

It seems I am also about a week to 10 days at least behind the first bloom time for last year.

Lava Flow is always one of the first to bloom for me in Nebraska. Of course it'll be awhile before it blooms here. I planted 100 seedlings last week before the rains started. It's supposed to be in the mid 50's down to 35 next week so I'll wait another week to start planting my other 500 or more seedlings. I've started weeding the older beds. We have had to babysit two grandkids, 2 and 4, all week so with the rains it was good timing. It looks like the grandkids are about to arrest me and put me in jail so I'm out of here.

Bitsy is always one of the firsts here. Last year Earlybird Orangeade beat it.

But Bitsy is like the Energizer Bunny. It just keeps going and going and going. Smiling

Avedon, hope you get some Tribal Counsel pics to post soon! Miss Victoria is sweet!

I don't usually get blooms here until the end of June but it's a race between Stella D'Oro and Child Bride. Except Child Bride is usually one of the last blooming ( blooms all summer into Fall). However, my Stella quits by mid July. Considering that I bought it at Stop and Shop, I really wonder whether it's a real Stella at all. Sad

My first bloom last year was Black Eyed Stella on April 4th. It doesn't even have a scape yet this year. Also have noticed a bit of rust on some. We had a good bit of snow and ice for almost a week in February (which is very unusual for us) so it will probably make everything a little later than usual.

We dodged a big bullet last night--supposed to have really bad weather, very high winds and large hail. I was afraid the gardens would take a hit, but for whatever reason, the bad storms passed us by, we had just a little bit of rain. So today I went out and looked at Stella's Sparky, and sure enough, it has at least ten scapes. This plant is great, its space was supposed to be temporary
but it was never moved and maybe it won't be since it's doing so well where it is. I hate to hear about rust in anyone's garden, I hope ours has been killed by the extreme cold.

This is a scape on one side of the plant, there is another one on the fan on other side. This is Prickly Sensation. This plant has never bloomed, arrived in spring of 2019. Needless to say, I am looking forward to seeing any flower at all. Checked Stella's Sparky this morning, bud count up to fifteen. I also saw this guy on a weed, anybody know what caterpillar this is?

There are quite a few of these showing up, what damage can they do, chew all the leaves off plants?

I'm with Debra and Roger/Karen, "no scapes". Plus, I haven't checked due to my ankle I sprained a couple weeks ago. (Have a grade 2 sprain, which takes about four to six weeks to heal.)

Looking outside from my windows, the daylily foliage look nice and are big enough to make scapes.
Not only people give others signs, but plants do too.

Avedon ~ Beautiful caterpillar, sadly I don't know what kind it is.
Bugs are already coming out also. I always seem to get piss ants (those teeny-tiny ants) in my home every spring. Surprisingly, they don't last long. My house is very clean, so I don't have to worry about them living off any traces of food people leave behind. I did research, and besides in search for food, they come in when in need of warmth and moisture.

There was also a huge spider in my home last week that was crawling up my bedroom closet wall after my sister removed something off the shelf for me. She told me it looked like a wolf spider. 😖

I hope she got rid of the spider because I don't want to go upstairs once my ankle heals and come across the spider.

Not only people give others signs, but plants do too.

Ian, sorry about your ankle, heal soon. Gotta get out to see the flowers, right? I don't know if wolf spiders are the ones we see all around our property, we just call them garden spiders. The ones I get unhappy about are black widow spiders and they are out here, too. I always wear gloves when I am out cleaning wooded areas around our house, they like old fallen tree limbs to hide in. Another thing to watch out for now that spring is here are snakes--I try to be extra careful when cleaning any flower bed, they could be hiding there. The close encounter I had five years ago with the water moccasin in one of the daylily beds is one too many.

Eek, a water moccasin, that is scary! I've never seen any snakes in my yard. I used to have garter snakes because one of my cats used bring them to me occasionally.

Ian, be careful of that ankle, especially walking uneven surfaces! What rotten timing with Spring underway! Two years ago, I broke my ankle in mid Match and had to wear a boot until June. Not fun!

We are still far from scapes here but I'm starting a fan count. Adorable Tiger went completely crazy, transitioning from four fans to thirty five. Blinking
