Has anyone pushed the envelope trying to grow blue ginger outdoors in the winter? I'm in 8a and the description says 9a is the coldest it will tolerate. I really want it in the ground, it's a fairly large plant. Would a spot next to the house foundation be advisable? Christmas tree lights like they place on banana trees to keep warm? Fools rush in? Hilarious!

I used to grow it as a die back perennial in 8B so it will return if it freezes down, if you do a heavy mulch

I would love to try this too. Such gorgeous blooms!

So many plants that are only root-hardy here do not get enough attention as garden plants. Having started my gardening in OH, it's fine with me that many plants disappear between the frosts. When everything dies down after a frost, it's so easy to deal with oak, dewberry, smilax, and other seedlings that I did not even see when the "good" plants were growing - and they don't get too big to move around or try to take over.

Thanks Gina and Tiffany. Lovey dubby That's where I plan on planting it then, next to the foundation and heavy mulch in the winter. My hedychium die back to the ground every yr so hopefully this one will recover and bring me some more blue flowers.

It was a 'plant of the moment' in the mid to late 2000's. I got one and have had it ever since. Of course no one remembers it now LOL...too many new things have come around since them

I had both of them at my last home and they did so well. I brought a piece of the upright one here and it has struggled. I am at the point where I think I should just shovel prune it and start with a new one.

Interesting. Where was your last home? Maybe give it a chance in a different spot in your yard?

Last home was on the coast of South Carolina, same zone and pretty similar growing conditions. Shrug! Shrug! Shrug!

OK, thank you! Not being nosy, just trying to learn where you saw it doing well.

I have been thinking and that plant was a good 20 years old when I took a piece and brought it to this house. Maybe it is just suffering from old age (like me.)
