On the Crinums, not all are fragrant. You will just have to wait for a bloom and let us know.

By the way, when I had a minute to be outside yesterday, I noticed another perennial herb that stays green all winter. Oregano which stays low to the ground and will trail over the edges of your bed. Just a thought.

I'll keep everyone posted on the crinum. I really like oregano, I'll write that one down in my garden journal. I'm going to wait until HD, Lowes, or Walmart have the herb starter plants. I was thinking about growing herbs from seed, but I'm not that patient lol.

Yes... they will have all the common herbals and it is fun to rub the leaves and smell the fragrances. You will be able to tell if you prefer that herb. There are different Oreganos so be sure to rub the leaves and smell the oily fragrance first.

I lean toward experimenting with the exotics. Things you won't commonly find in the garden centers, so I start some from seed and order some as plants. There is something gratifying from starting from seed, you'll be trying that before long too ~ i would bet.

The past couple of years I have grown a lot of my garden plants from seed. I would love to grow the more exotic herbs but so far I've only found the common varieties.

Thank you Kristi. I saw some Feverfew seeds. I had that plant several years ago. I also had some German Chamomile that sprouted in my yard last year. I don't know how the seeds ended up in my yard. There's so many interesting plants on that site. I especially like the toothache plant.

I believe I still have some seeds from Spilanthes ~ toothache plant. My seeds are a couple years old. I didn't plant any last year. Hopefully they will still germinate.

They are a fun little plant. The blooms are interesting, commonly called an eyeball plant. I like to show them to kiddos and let them nibble a leaf. It will temporarily numb the gums. Fun, fun, fun.

They really do look like eyeballs lol. I'm going to stop by Lowes today to see if they have any unique seeds. I bought my candy cane zinnias from Lowes last year.

Ok thanks so much Kristi Smiling I went to Lowes but they didn't have any flower or herb seeds in stock yet.

I am surprised they don't have seeds out yet. Most stores put out Halloween or Christmas decorations way too early. I would expect the same with seeds and plants. Let me look through my seed stash and I'll let you know.

I was surprised too. Both Walmart and Home Depot had seeds and bulbs in stock. I think Lowes got their bulbs in stock earlier this week and there weren't many.

LOL unfortunately I didn't. I brought home a 3 pack Red Hot Poker package today. I couldn't pass them up. I want to plant them on the edge of my herb/flower garden.

Sounds like they gottcha! I love to look through the garden centers but after so many years, I usually walk out empty handed.

I finally rummaged through my seed stash tonight and found I have Spilanthes seed if you would like to try some?

If so, just send me a Tree-Mail with your address. If I recall, these are easy to germinate as long as you keep the soil moist.

I grow Rue for the butterflies...it doesn't take a lot of water. But not many herbs can do without any watering here in my southcentral Texas desert. Rosemary and lavender do pretty good.

They got me again yesterday lol. I bought some Red Hot Poker seeds, some blue bedder salvia seeds, and some more Candy Cane zinnia seeds. I would love to try some
Spilanthes seeds : ) I really like the look of Rue Linda. I definitely want to attract more butterflies in my garden this year. Last year the Candy Cane zinnias attracted so many butterflies, I've never had so many in my yard before.

The advantages Rue adds make it worth a try. It is sometimes used as a host plant by two species of butterfly, it's easy to care for and it blooms fairly often...even in the winter for me...attracting those early butterflies. Right now I've got Red Admirals, sulfurs and at least one Gulf Fritillary around here during this warm spell. I had some really nice orange zinnias last year, although I don't remember the name. I also use drought tolerant natives as much as I can. Last couple of years I've become fond of Goldeneye, which grows out on the property away from access to watering.

I'm slowly starting to switch over to drought tolerant plants. Today I bought some Giant California zinnias and some blanketflower seeds. My one blaketflower plant bloomed up until the end of December. Goldeneye is a very beautiful plant. I think I've seen something that looks similar to that in my area. Its amazing that you still have butterflies in your garden. I had Gulf Fritillaries last year and they completely ate my Blue Crown passion vine. I planted some maypop seeds a few weeks ago and I'm anxiously waiting for them to sprout.

I have Passiflora morifolia seeds, if you'd like some. The butterflies don't care for it. Gets lots of fruit in the fall.
