Driving home yesterday I saw a guy with a string trimmer @ a bank and he'd gathered some bags of leaves. My natural reaction was to slam on and drive over the curb immediately - but I fought it, remained calm and did not cause a wreck. Went around the block and asked him if I could have the bags and he said sure, people asking for bags of leaves happens all the time.

I got 5 giant bags that completely filled the back of my suburban! I'm as excited about this as I am about the plants I've bought this spring. LOL! People do not bag leaves around here except in that kind of situation. The custom is to pile them by the road to be picked up by a big truck with a grabbing scoop thing. To "steal" other people's leaves is literally dirty work.

Tiffany- the 'guy at a bank'..meaning the landscape crew? Around here, I have seen the landscape crews raking off last year's mulch before adding new mulch. The old mulch looks like great rich material. I am sad to see it probably going to the dump.
One time they were planting and had left some empty pots about. I kind of cleaned those up for them.. pretty sure those would also just go to dump.

Yes, if 1 guy can be called a crew.

Somebody needs to explain mulch to those folks you saw raking off last year's mulch. I would pay more for that than new mulch in a bag. Great job on the pots!

I don't have much luck with a pile since moving to AL, but I do have a spot where a pile would help finish killing some baby trees that I cut down near ground level. Or I may be using these leaves AS mulch once frost knocks everything down in the fall. It's so hard to decide, this is such a rare bounty.
