Lynn, this cat's name is Peri... short for Periwinkle which was what the rescue shelter named her. We don't care much about names so we just stick with whatever comes first.
Here's a better look.

Here's the pretty-much finished new look of my semp beds. Maye some more gravel to fill in and it will darken up after getting washed by rain.

It's sort of what I was expecting. To me it's a big improvement cuz it's finally cleaned up and tidy. I was worried the pots would look awful but it's not so bad. Different... but not bad.
Here's another look.

The problem now is not too little growth, but too much. They're growing like gangbusters. Better lay off the QuickStart.

Here's a rescue pot of 'Pacific Velveteen'. I don't much like the fuzzies but the velvet textures of this one and 'Pacific Magic Night' and 'Pacific Mauve' are way cool. I had considered these finicky weaklings that couldn't take our winter wet. Turns out it's more likely the dense soil that was the real problem. I think it will probably thrive in this potted soil. No longer found in our semp database I wonder why not.

Another problem cultivar has been 'Lavender and Old Lace'. An awesome cultivar. I thought I'd try it again and ordered one from SMG last Fall and here it is.

I wonder if this is a correct specimen. It doesn't look right but maybe it will come around.

My Easter Lily Cactus... not a semp... but there are semps in the picture so it's legit.

Tim, that is looking really good. They all look so healthy now. I agree with you on the dense packed soil. I ran into that problem a time or two. Your hard work has really paid off.
Little Peri is adorable. Such a sweet face.
Boy, that agave is huge now. Love it, and the blooms on the cactus. Is that one winter hardy?

Yes, Bev, you could even say the semps are wimpy by comparison. But I would never say that. I'm still waiting to see the day that Agave blooms with a 15 foot tall flower stalk.
Lynn, the Easter Lily Cactus cannot stay outside unprotected from moisture. Keeping it dry in the winter is a must. I keep mine in a small green house and it does fine. I think a covered porch would work as well... not sure.

Semp garden restoration is mostly complete... just a few odds and ends. Maintenance going forward is another mystery for the future. But for the time being I declare success.

This is now the view I now get while I sit on my back porch on summer evenings sipping my daily libation. Different from what it used to be... but nice I think.

Tim, quick question! What's the range of inches in the various sized pots you planted the "revitalized" semps in?

Bev, I started with the standard 1 gallon pots which I soon realized were way too small. Mostly I'm using #2, 1.7 gallon, 8-9 inch topside diameter. I used a couple of #3 size but for cost and ease I stuck with the #2 size. They fill quickly believe me. It will help me keep things tidy and in control I'm hoping.

tcstoehr said: Now you've motivated me JoAnn. I'm gonna try it on some portion of my sempery. Another experiment. I gotta say using bark dust/chips is something I never would have though of until I stumbled upon it. If anyone has some reason not to do this, let us know. I guess I'll find out either way.

Lynn... no gravel in there... at least not noticeable. Maybe a few bits broken off from the pebbled walkway bordering it.

What types of chips or mulch are ok for semps? And is fall a good time for me to repot mine, they had a rough summer and their soil may need fluffed.

Alice, if you are going to repot you should do it right away, before it gets cold. They need a few weeks to establish new roots.
The soil I get for the beds if a forest compost with coarse sand, the semps love it.
I know Old Man Dan uses ground up pine bark, he has very good results for years.
