I have a little thread about my potted rooted cutting of hoya pubicalyx Royal Hawaiian Purple (which is looking more like an official 'plant' now, doing well).
But I recently bought another unlabeled pubicalyx hoya in the garden center, it's a much more developed plant. Looked content so I did not repot.

It's different enough looking to me so that i suspect it's a 'regular' pubicalyx (I assume there is such a thing?) and not RHP. It has slightly smaller and darker leaves than my RHP, with modest silver speckling- not heavy speckles like pix of "Splash" variety. The new vines look very dark maroon, and the new leaves are super dark too, which i love and is why i bought it. If anyone has thoughts or knowledge on what specific hoya this is (short of waiting until it blooms of course), do tell!
Looks very healthy and is putting out new vines and leaves like mad in the mere two weeks I've had it...

So many cultivars of Wax Plant (Hoya pubicalyx) look similar and with the variability in leaf coloration, amount of splashes and splotches, or even lack of splashes and splotches, if the grower did not label it, I don't know how one determines the exact cultivar name.

That being said, your new plant does resemble Wax Plant (Hoya pubicalyx 'Red Buttons') I just submitted proposals to have my photos moved from that entry to the species page because I don't believe my pic's belong to the cultivar 'Red Buttons'. Here two photos showing the resemblance to your plant:

Culture conditions like light intensity and heat stress may play a part in leaf coloration. I've had a few over the years that have thrown out leaves that are dark brownish-green to purple in color. Foliage on many Hoyas (including H. pubicalyx) will turn red and purplish shades when grown in a lot of sun. My old photos below came from cuttings that I got in a co-op from an Australia Hoya nursery years ago. The cuttings were supposed to be 'Royal Hawaiian Purple' but once the plant matured and bloomed, I realized I'd gotten the wrong cuttings because the flowers were much lighter in color than those of RHP. It resembled my Hoya pubicalyx 'Red Buttons' which I didn't really want another one of but I was stuck and just labeled it Hoya pubicalyx since I wasn't certain which cultivar it was. I have a feeling someone in the co-op group got my RHP cuttings.

Thank you Lin that's a lot of helpful information. :)
My plant does seem to resemble that second photo by SRQHoyas.
This thing is growing like mad. I can see the difference in growth between in the morning and again later that very same evening. Yikes!

No way, really !?
Should I give it a drink of 1/2 strength organic fish-based orchid fertilizer?

What is your weather like up there? My Hoya plants stay outside year round here and I fertilize in spring and throughout the summer. I always use a water soluble plant food and have both Better-Grow Orchid Better Bloom (11-35-15) and Jack's Classic Bloom Booster Plant Food(10-30-20). I've been feeding at half strength about every 3 weeks for a couple of months now. I used to add a capful or so of organic kelp fish fertilizer to the water but the odor was a bit strong for me and the dogs were too attracted to it so I haven't used it in awhile. Green Grin!

Lin, it's still in the high 30's/low 40's at night here. Chilly! And quite a bit of rainy and often 20mph wind. It's full on Spring now but the weather is acting two weeks behind so far this month.
I've got a fresh bottle of this overpriced Espoma's organic orchid fertilizer:

Yeah it smells quite fish-y but the smell fades quickly. I need to use it up (and also my bottle of cactus fertilizer) before I consider buying anything else. Directions say 1 cap per quart water, but I've been mixing it 1 cap per 1.5 qt water for most of my houseplants. Would that be ok? It's 1-3-1 so that seems rather mild? BTW it's in a 5" nursery pot, which I just slipped into another prettier brown plastic 6" pot, both have drainage holes.
I wasn't planning to fertilize this hoya yet since I just got it two weeks ago... but it obviously is charging full speed ahead so i guess i should fertilize it like once or twice a month during this growth spurt? What's your advice about my fertilizing action plan?

This pubicalyx is growing fast. I've been using 1/2 strength organic fish orchid fertilizer every other time i water it.
I had to put a little trellis because it was flailing its tentacles all over the place. lolol
I keep looking for peduncles but nothing yet. Crossing Fingers!
Here it is now...

Looking good!!! Thumbs up Some Hoyas sure do like to shoot out vines here, there and everywhere and I wouldn't be at all surprised if you see peduncles forming in the next month or two!
