So is it bad to grow any kind of perennial among the irises? Does that mean I shouldn't allow love-in-a-mist to self-sow among the irises?

Mixed gardens are fine. Just space the irises so that they have light and air. My garden is a mixed garden and more than 80% of my irises bloomed this year. I enjoy having things that can bloom before, with, and after the irises.
