I have a orchid plant that i haven't had to long and it's starting to get small black spots on the bloom leafs. I do not know what type of orchid this is as there were no ID tags. For what ever it's worth to anyone it's purple and white. I want to do what ever it takes to save it.

It is a Phalaenopsis orchid. The spots on the flowers are most likely Botrytis, a type of fungus that comes from very humid air and poor air circulation.
It is not life threatening to the orchid. It will bloom again next season without the spots. These flowers that have spots will keep those spots until they die back and fall off. Flowers typically last around three weeks +/-.

However, now for a little bad news. The flower has been dyed with food coloring. That shade of purple is not natural. When it blooms again, the flowers will be mostly white. The purple will be gone.

No, I do not sell orchids. I have been growing since 1975 but for the last 4 years, I have been forced to grow underlights.
Thumb of 2021-05-29/BigBill/71f2c6

I grow mostly Lady slippers, Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums, compact Cattleyas and other smaller types.
I acquire plants @ shows, e-bay and from a few select vendors.
I have grown in a greenhouse for 33 years and on a lanai in Florida for 9. But when I moved to Michigan at 68 years of age, I did not want to start a greenhouse from scratch. It made no sense money wise!
If you need other questions answered I remain at your service to answer them. My good ole brain is just so full of information acquired through speaking, reading, lecturing, attending society meetings and programs. I am just so pleased to pass this on to every one!!
Take care!
IF YOU ASK, I WILL ANSWER. Ha ha ha!

Big Bill, you have really peaked my interest in these orchids. You said ,you ask and I'll answer, well here goes.
For right now i would like to get another orchids, so is it a good idea to get mail orders of them or go to a
store like Walmart's or some place else? I don't want a piece of junk that will die out in a week or so.
I don't know what colors they come in but, do they come in a red or other bright colors?
Just how much light do they need? I read that they need to be in a bright place but not in the direct sun.
The one i have i have been feeding it Miracle-Gro orchid food, does that work ok?
Take care

The major types of orchids that do well inside are:
Oncidiums-hybrids such Wildcat. This features brightly colored 1 1/2"- 2" flowers anywhere from 12-40 in number. Spikes branch, flowers last 2 months in total. Wildcats can be found from yellows, through reds and burgundy. Many with spots and blotches of other colors.
Oncidium Sharry Baby- tall spikes of a hundred flowers or more, 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" wide, basically reds and white, some pink spots and blotches. Smells like chocolate.
But many Oncidium hybrids are similar to those 2 examples.
But if you regularly look at our current thread, "What is in bloom-May 2021", our members post images from their collections of what is currently in flower. Pretty soon our June 2021 thread will start. You will see things there that may strike your interest.
Oncidiums do not need a lot of direct sun, just an hour or so.

But go to that AOS website and download those culture sheets. Oncidium, Paphiopedilum, and Phalaenopsis is where you start. Those are the cheapest and easiest. But those three take the least amount of sunlight. Temperatures from 60 degrees through 85 degrees.
Orchids in general do NOT require lots of food, maybe 4-6 times a year.

Now avoid Vandas!!! They need lots of water, fertilizer and a minimum of 6 hours of full sun.
Now that should help with your increased desire.

Oh where to buy.
It is impossible to transplant my knowledge into you but I buy some things on e-bay. I know prices and quality. You'll be amazed at what some sellers think their plants might be worth. Strong caution is advised!!!!
There is nothing wrong with plants at Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot or Trader Joe's.
You buy them. Everyone of my friends here, and me, will help you to grow them!!! That I can confidently promise you!! Until next time.

Ok, one more for today then I'll leave you alone. I would like to find something in a solid red or a red and white mix. What kind do i need and is it better to get something that is just starting out or one that is blooming?

Trader Joe's has this hybrid from time to time but on-line vendors have it. It should not be hard to find. Odontocidium Debutatnte. 2" blood red and white flowers!!

You are NOT bothering me!

I just use conventional plastic pots.

My ingredients for my mix are aliflor (baked clay pellets) small size, seedling grade fir bark, medium fir bark, seedling grade charcoal and seedling grade perlite.
I use them or mix them according to the type of orchid.

Repot me.com has supplies.
I personally get all of my supplies from the Green Barn in Delray Beach Florida. Great prices, great people.

OFE International in Miami is another place. They are on line too.
