I got this unusual pot with Ponytail Palm for a steal off Craigslist!
Feb 5, 2013 10:33 PM CST
Wait, you got the great pot with the great Ponytail IN IT???? How fabulous is that? Can I ask you how much...if not, then a range of the cost?
Feb 6, 2013 4:58 AM CST
I paid $ 25 I know - I practically stole it. The owner was moving to a condo....
Feb 6, 2013 3:00 PM CST
Okay, I just picked myself up off the floor. $25?
What a gold mine Hetty. I have to keep going back to look at it. Wow.
Feb 6, 2013 3:11 PM CST
Yeah, I know...... It was quite a slog to get it home but SO worth it.
Feb 6, 2013 3:20 PM CST
How tall is it? It looks huge.
Feb 6, 2013 3:48 PM CST
About three feet tall, yes, it is huge. And whereas I would half-fill a pot like that with styrofoam pieces, the person who planted the ponytail decided rocks would be good in the bottom
Feb 6, 2013 5:07 PM CST
Now I understand why you had so much trouble getting it home.
That should help to keep it from tipping over, being bottom heavy.
Feb 6, 2013 9:09 PM CST
Very nice!! I still can't get past that you are able to keep it outside
Feb 7, 2013 4:30 AM CST
Zone Ten!!! The high for today is 83.....

Worth every penny, Hetty. Great find.

May I just say Congratulations This is pot with the plant is a statement. I would make it bottom heavy with stones, wouldn´t want to have it broken in heavy winds.
Feb 7, 2013 5:45 AM CST
It looks like hand built clay.
I would kill for it.
Lucky you and the plant is perfect.
Stones are a heavy haul.

I was pretty darn pleased to have snagged it It came as a package deal with another, nice but not unusual pot. The latter, a fairly squat, round, maroon colored pot had a Strelitzia nicolai in it, which has since found its way to the Botanical Garden where I work since it will get much too big for my yard. It was terribly pot bound.
I'll be looking for something nice to put in that one this weekend!
Feb 7, 2013 6:18 AM CST
any pix of it?
Feb 7, 2013 6:35 AM CST
I did a little googling and it is about this kind of shape. Probably 16 inches diameter.
That blue is pretty nice too but mine is a maroon color.
I have a tall maroon pot and I bet I could probably come up with another one and put them in a group together.....
Feb 7, 2013 6:37 AM CST
I can't remember when I last bought a pot at a shop.... yard sales are my best source for large planters since many people downsize when they move.
Feb 7, 2013 9:57 AM CST
What does a Strelitzia nicolai look like? And how big does it get, that it wouldn't fit in that wonderful yard of yours Hetty?
Feb 7, 2013 10:44 AM CST
It is a 'White Bird of Paradise' and it gets very big. I have one already...
Feb 7, 2013 3:50 PM CST
Any suggestions for planting this pot? I measured it and it's actually 20 inches in diameter, and 12 inches high. I looked and I don't actually have a third maroon colored pot, but I could probably come up with one in the near future...
