It could be that your plant is a fairly recent import from Thailand. Or at least a cutting from a recent import. Meaning, it may have been living outside in a jungley situation before coming to the US to be babied.

I've gotten some with those marks over the last few years. I never saw mites or fungus. I've purchased a few directly from Thailand and lost several--mostly because I didn't realize I should keep them in high humidity for a week or two to get them adapted. Good luck. Quarantine never hurt anything.
