I have only had one tulip that multiplied like gangbusters for me:
Cassini, a red Triumph tulip.

Can anyone recommend some others?

tulipa praestans "Unicum" has multiplied quite well for me. Most of the smaller species tulips do as well.

'Little Beauty' in one year has mutiplied by at least double from last year.
