Hi everyone. I bought this plant a year ago, it was really really tiny, just a couple of leaves. One year on, she keeps growing taller and taller. I was wondering if it's possible to cut it at the top, to keep its height in check, but also to encourage the bottom leaves to grow bigger? At the moment it looks quite thin at the bottom. I am not sure whether by cutting it I would do the plant any damage. Thanks in advance for any help.

Your plant can be pruned back to any height without harm to the plant. New growth will emerge subsequently starting right at the point where you make the pruning cut and grow upward from there. You might get more than one new shoot at that point. However, it will not produce new growth lower down on the stem or change the size of any of the existing leaves.

What kind of plant is it?

It looks like Iresine to me. If not that, it's probably Alternanthera.

Very nice! Your plant looks like Iresine to me too, possibly Beefsteak Plant (Iresine diffusa f. herbstii 'Aureoreticulata') and although they do grow tall, they are usually pruned for a fuller appearance. You can prune yours to a desired height and root the cuttings for additional plants!

Except the plant in question has leaves with parallel veins and seems to be a double.

Iresine leaves sometimes do that.
