I rear all my cats outdoors. This way, they receive crucial environmental cues they wouldn't otherwise get if they were indoor. This is especially crucial for the migrating monarch generation. Studies have been done to show differences in monarchs who was reared indoor v outdoor. The abstract, to summarize, is that the gps of the migratory monarch reared indoors gets off kilter. They are at risk for a consistent rerouting en route to Mexico.

Hi. I'm new to raising monarchs. It was an accident really. I saw several and decided to put them in a screened habitat. It's really stressful. A few do not look OK but how do I know for sure? I'm posting photos of one of them.

Did you put a source of food inside the container for them as well? When I was doing that I dug up a milkweed plant and put it in a container and left that in the screened in box I made for them (box was about 4' tall and 2' square and screened on all 4 sides, so plenty of room to stick a huge plant).

Welcome Michael! I'd like to hear more about the butterflies your family is raising.
I have no idea what the rules are for blogs. but if you click on the drop-down menu at the top where it says "community", there is a link for forums where you are now but there is also one for blogs so maybe that will help you get started.

Posted these in the cactus and succulents forum since this caterpillar decided to make its home in a euphorbia, and reposting here. One day difference between the first two photos. Smiling

Beautiful! There are still a few cats in my yard. I moved some of them to different plants because they had eaten all of the foliage on their original plant. I had no idea they could survive light frost.
