An acquaintance has given up trying to salvage this plant that has rot. I picked it up this morning and washed all the soil away from the roots. The roots look and feel fairly strong. This plant was root bound and the soil was moist, I'm thinking it was staying too wet. Anyhow there appears to be some rot on the upper branches. I was going to cut these branches until I reached only white stems. How long should I wait before repotting in a well draining soil? Any other ideas are welcome so please advise if there are other measures to be taken to save this beauty. Thanks for all the help. Anole

nice lookin' plant .... Thumbs up

roots look healthy - once the stems with rot are removed, I think your plant has a pretty good chance ....

allow any & all cuts to callous over before repotting ....
this can take several days to over 2 weeks depending on humidity ...... and I know its humid in Thibodaux

after pruning off rot - dust the entire plant with fungicide ....or use rooting hormone w/fungicide ....
place in a shady spot to air dry ...away from direct sun & rain

in the meantime ...mix up a batch of chunky + gritty potting media .... it should have more inorganic material - such as rocks & sand - than organic material - such as soil

once stems callous over - I would repot an inch or so below the green - exposing an inch or so of the white roots this is called lifting or raising .....

oh yeah ....don't expect anything to happen ..... adenium take forever to respond to changes

James, thanks for the helpful hints, I saw this plant when it was in all its glory and it was a beautiful plant with lots of blooms. I am hoping to bring it back to that one day. I will have patience. Yes the heat and humidity and awful right now especially after a thunderstorm.

thanks again.

Gigi, sorry about getting back to you on your query about the adenium, hurricane Ida has been a major problem. I just had Internet service restored today, anyhow as you can see in the photo the plant is thriving. There are lots of new shoots and it seems to be well on the way to recovery. Thanks for your interest.

I wanted to post an update on the Adenium that I posted some time back. It is starting to bloom and has several buds. Our low temps in south Louisiana have dipped into the 40's and 50's with the occasional upper 30's (which lasts only a couple of hours). Once the really cold temps arrive I will bring it in. I am very happy with the results. Thanks to all for your helpful suggestions.

I wanted to post an update on the adenium I posted back in July 2021. The plant is thriving and as you can see it has lots of blooms and lots of new growth. The previous owner has seen pictures and has named it Lazarus. My other adeniums are blooming profusely. Thanks all for comments and helpful hints.

I agree Great save John! My very first adenium, is seedgrown and had this "red on ice" bloom but mine I think is dwarf since it hasn't grown much at 8 years old!

Gigi, here is a picture of Lazarus, it had several blooms and now I have two seed pods. Can't wait for the seed pods to mature. We have been getting regular rain in south Louisiana but I made sure the potting medium is a well drain one. I did put another picture in the thread where I posted the seed pods which were turning brown if you could check that out I would appreciate it.

@Anole, did Lazarus rebloom? Mine usually reblooms even when there is still a seedpod. Hope you are able to harvest all the seedpods and hopefully have some new babies from Lazarus! What a great save!

@Gigi, unfortunately Lazarus did not rebloom, of the two seedpods produced, one did have viable seeds which I have harvested and will start next spring. I could have started some seeds now but I have too much other "stuff" going on and I would not be able to devote enough attention to the seeds. I have harvested several seeds from other plants and it will be a busy spring next year.

That is great! Yes they will have better germination and survival next year. Not sure If it helped or not but I kept my last year's seeds in the fridge in ziploc bags where I keep my eggs. Smiling keeping them fresh. I got better germination rate.
