Thanks.

Are you trying to put us out of work? I know the pay is non-existent but I still rate us higher than any app ever invented. And we have personality! When's the last time an app told you silly stories or got all green over your plant?

@ViburnumValley Do you think that I am a person who is "rude, intolerant, and totally lacking in Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval horticultural bona fides"? I never meant to offend anyone. Please tell me how I am being rude because I try to be kind. I am still new here and I still have a lot to learn so I did not know about the app. Please forgive me.

We are trying to point out the people who make up NGA are better than an app so why would you suggest an app to anyone? WE are the app and sometimes we (the app) are helpful and funny and sometimes we (the app) are grating and obnoxious.

You are part of this app. Its like Microsoft suggesting you buy an Apple.

The point about photo apps should be that you can never count on accuracy with any photo app. There isn't enough information to provided. If you were sick, would you count on the accuracy of a medical doctor's opinion if he just looked at a photo of your blemish, didn't touch it and didn't ask any questions about other symptoms or the blemish itself?

Likewise, a photo app can only go so far if it doesn't know where the plant grows, how big it is, if the photo is true in color, if the leaf is glossy or flat surfaced, what the stem looks like, what the leaves look like (if it is a pick of a flower), what the flower looks like (if it is a pic of the leaves), etc., etc., etc. and about ten more etceteras.

But yes, there must be better and worse apps out there. Unfortunately I can't help you with this, as I have not used any of them.

That's why I would never use an ap, or consider it the last word if I did. How do I know what it said is right?

Well, true, that is a good point about them. I have used these apps before and they often did not identify plants correctly. Here, it is possible to request more information but on most photo apps that's not really a thing.

Be objective. Take a plant you absolutely know, and test the efficacy/accuracy of any or all apps you wish.

If I cared enough to do this (I am in Leftwood's camp on this one), I would take various parts of that plant I already know and see if the app can still give the same answer each time. Do this over and over with many types of plants and all their parts, and get an idea of percentages correct.

If you've participated here - where you DO get (mostly) human responses to questions - you know that sometimes people post very little info. If thousands of very good eyes can't decipher a really poor posting, do you think the app is going to do better?

I think the best ID sites use people instead of (or at least in addition to) AI. Like Leftwood noted: would you like to be diagnosed that way?

For those who absolutely swear of the app, by the app, and for the app: taste every mushroom the app identifies as edible. That way, you will have absolute proof of its perfection, and the evolutionary pool will have advanced.

@Gardener2493:

No offense to you intended, and no forgiveness required! My comment was more about a situation elsewhere on the site where such epithets were flying around. Won't find an app that can do THAT.

As stated here in several different ways: an app will be humorless and finite in information provided. Humans (as generally populate NGA) will range across the spectrum of kindness and helpfulness, with some of us tripping/falling into pejoratives, pontification, and apoplexy.

May you find here a garden in which to flourish.
