Hurricane Henri is supposed to hit New York on Sunday, and downgrade to a tropical storm once it moves inland. Still, it's expected to bring heavy rains and wind gusts up to 75 mph in our area. So I went into the gardens to cut a bouquet of roses this afternoon, before tomorrow's storm blows all the petals to the winds. This is the hybrid tea 'Pink Intuition,' and it makes a dazzling bouquet.

I hope you don't get significant damage from Henri; your landscape is so lovely.

Good luck, Mike.
I spent most of the afternoon feeding roses.
We're (NYC) not likely to get hit badly by the hurricane, but
I wanted to get the food down before the rain!

Thank you for the good wishes!

David, I'm doing the same tomorrow morning... putting down fertilizer that will get deeply watered into the ground by the heavy rains.

Mike, I got my Pink Intuition from Steve Singer at Wisconsin Roses, as a grafted maiden back in 2007, and it remains one of my very best roses. It blooms a ton, is very vigorous, and the blooms have a lot of substance, and are perhaps my longest lasting blooms on the bush.
Good luck to you with the oncoming storm!

I am on the north shore of Long Island in Suffolk county. Pruning was done where necessary rather than have the canes whip around in the wind. I made up a bouquet of flowers for a elderly neighbor, which was most appreciated. The remaining roses were ditched - what a shame. I fertilized about half of the 300 roses - ran out of time and energy. Kicked back with a glass of 2017 Antigal Uno Malbec wine - Argentina.

Susan, I also got my Pink Intuitions as maiden plants from Steve Singer years ago, and I agree with your description of the long-lasting blooms. I got Red Intuition from him as well. Here are some more photos of both.

I am fine. Yes, there was some rain and windy conditions but nothing terrible - no loss of electricity. Sending a big thanks to everyone for your concern.

Mike, I got both Red and Pink Intuitions from Steve as well around the same time (2007). Both are great, but I find Pink is a lot more vigorous... taller, with thicker stems. But both have amazing substance. I sent Steve budwood for one of my favorite out-of-commerce roses a month or so ago for him to custom bud. I've had like 2% success rate in making cuttings of it, so I have my fingers crossed that he will be successful with it!
Sending my best thoughts to all of you in the path of Henri.

Susan, you're right about the substance; the petals have remarkable staying power (although I find in humid conditions they can sometimes brown a little bit, given the density of the blooms). The sheer number of blooms is also remarkable for a hybrid tea.

So far, the winds have not been anything to worry about as Henri sweeps over our area, but we are on the very edge of the tropical storm zone. So far, the rain gauge in the garden says we've gotten three inches of rain. I'm sure all the plants will love it in the hot temperatures to come later this week (low 90s).

Hybrid tea 'Pink Intuition' bouquet is lovely. The petals looks so thick. Red isn't my favorite but that swirl of contrast in Red Intuition is hypnotizing.

I'm in northern NJ. As the rains were coming down I decided to take an Oliva Austin flower to work with me, to remind me of the garden and to occasional get a nice sniff of fragrance.

Storm totals...
They tell me that Central Park in NYC got rain totals of more than 7 inches on Saturday.
Well, I live within 12-14 blocks of the weather station in Central Park and, while there was
steady, steady rain, I don't think I got 7 inches in my garden. However, there was a lot of
water coming from the skies. That, in combination with 90 degree days, should make for
a few nice blooms. Oh, boy!

Nice blooms, Rose Dream!

David, we ended up getting just shy of 4 inches over 24 hours in my rain gauge, and the winds were not nearly as forceful as originally predicted. But we're further north of you, and well to the northwest of Long Island, which took the brunt of the storm.

Glad to hear although more storms are coming don't know if we will get much rain from them. How late in the season ( month) can roses be fertilized here in southwest PA?
