Should kalanchoe be repotted in a bigger pot than the one it came in? If so, what size, & what material should the pot be?

Hi & welcome! What kind of Kalanchoe do you have? Are you able to add a pic?

Asked the same question about the K. thyrsiflora I bought earlier this year since it's grown so much over the Summer.

The nursery told me to wait until "after St. Valentine Day" to re-pot, using a container at most half an inch larger than the present one to avoid the plant from developing too large of a rootball. Very interesting fact, they told me to avoid cactus and succulent specific compound and to use instead a citrus tree potting compound.

PS: this nursery only uses plastic containers even for the largest and most expensive plants, so I'll stick too that.

Thanks! I read at another site that the original size pot is OK if one prunes & pinches back regularly.

How would a website know what size pot your plant is in now?

I would leave it in the pot its in unless its top heavy. Slide it out of the pot. If the roots are up against the pot side, put it in a bigger pot (give it 1/2 inch all the way around). If they aren't put it back into the original pot and drop that into a heavier pot.

Kalanchoes don't have huge root systems so over-potting, overwatering and root rot are a concern.

It would help to know what kind of plant we are discussing. Kalanchoe genus has a wide variety of species.

Thanks for those tips, Daisyl. I'm glad to know the original pots are typically OK. I'll have to do some major pruning.
