My sister was vacationing in Crete last week and she saw this and was wondering what it was. She said it was obviously rotted at the end. She asked and the vague answer she got was "it might be an eggplant". Could it be a Chinese or Japanese eggplant or none of the above?

Based on the stems and leaves, I'd say it's not an eggplant.

The plant under it looks like some kind of Asclepias. Maybe it's a deformed seed pod.

I don't see any leaves that look like senna, but perhaps they have dropped.

That bothered me too but it looks like there could be a compound leaf behind the top of the structure, that's also assuming the more linear single leaves are from a different plant.
