I have had specimens of this plant in my collection since about 2004/5. I have divided it several times, so I have quite a few. They make good breeding stock. This is an Anthurium cross, besseae x magnificum


This is a seedling grown from the pollen of this plant. Looks a lot like mama, right?


But in actuality, the plant that actually produced the SEED that grew this seedling is THIS one, Anthurium forgetii



This is a 'sister' plant to the seedling above. Looks a bit more like mama, but you can still see dad in there



What I find most interesting so far is that none of the seedlings from this cross seem to have the round closed sinus leaf form of the mother, Forgetii. I was hoping I would get the veining of the besseae x mag with the leaf form of the forgetii. I guess I will just have to keep trying!

They're all beautiful, even if the genetics aren't too predictable.

Are you planning to clone them once you find the perfect Anthurium? Or just having fun? What do you do with all the extra plants you produce?

I'm just having fun. If I get anything that looks really 'special', I will grow it to maturity and use it to breed with other plants. Some of the hybrids I am making are pretty complex. Every time I breed something with Anthurium 'Mehani', its an automatic 'really complex' hybrid.

'Mehani' is a hybrid itself that was hybridized in India in the early 2000's and imported for sale here in about 2006, where it was put into tissue culture. It was only produced for a few years. I have been in touch with the original breeder, who still lives in India and still breeds Anthuriums and other aroids. He gave me the exact parentage of Mehani, which to that date no one was aware of....

I have further pollinated and obtained seedlings using Mehani crossed with A. besseae x magnificum, Anthurium forgetii and Anthurium magnificum alone.

These are 5 seedlings of Mehani I have (I have about 100) but you can see the genetic variability in these with the introduction of the other plants...the older they get the more 'different from each other' they look

I sell and trade the extra plants, mostly locally. I only keep the ones that are really looking 'unusual' in the end

Did you every decide what the little "button" Hoya was? I know you said it looked like one of the scaly Hoyas - mine has never done anything but be a pile of leaves so I put it near a wall in case it wanted to do something different.

All the cuttings you sent me have rooted and are growing great.

I have not discovered what it is. I am thinking it may be serpens, or it may be a Dischidia. I am going to ask a few people I know who grow and import a lot of hoya what they think it is. It is definitely a shingling type hoya. The way it crawls along the floor of the terrarium, I know if I mounted some it would climb. Here it is in 2 spots...the 2nd is harder to see because a Rhaphidophora hayi overgrew it

This is a seedling that I am especially excited about. This individual is the ONLY ONE out of a large crop of offspring I got from crossing Anthurium 'Mehani' x besseae x magnificum.

Technically, the parentage is:
Anthurium 'Mehani' (A. magnificum x (radicans x luxurians) x crystallinum) x Anthurium besseae x magnificum.

So, 6 separate lineages contributed to this plant. The magnificum strains are 2 different strains...widely separated...the Mehani strain from India, the bess x mag strain from the USA (Hawaii)

@Daisyl the concensus among the Hoya peeps I know is that it is Hoya serpens
