They started out as a companion plant for my Plumeria, but I find myself more and more using them in their own right.
I just gave pride of place to three Alcantarea imperialis, now nice specimens!
This isn't the best picture since it needed to be cleaned up. I will post a picture soon of three of these guys in their new habitat.

Carol- that is a stunner!
Erik - I have that one as well but I need to move it, it likes less sun than what it is getting. Always a problem in my yard.

Hetty, do you have the Bromeliad, Billbergia 'Marbled Rainbow'? It is the main one I grow and the hands-down favorite of all who see and/or purchase brromeliads from me. The pictures don't do it justice since they were taken two years ago, using a fairly simple (cheap!) camera. One pic shows the red stalk just forming and this plant is ready to ship.

The purples, reds, and pinks of the flowers are fluorescent and simply beautiful. The leaves are bright green with cream-colored splotches all over the leaf surface. As the leaves age, they turn slightly maroon, making the cream splotches stand out even more.

This is an annual bloomer, spring-early summer, but mine bloom again when I put them in the greenhouse in October-November. Ken

Love, love, love them but will never get to enjoy them being outdoors year around. As a result I am careful about the sizes I chose for overwintering indoors.

Also have a variety of Cryptanthus, Dyckia and another favorite, the Orthophytums.

Thanks for that ID suggestion. I noticed it is producing pups differently than the others and will try to remember to post a photo when it blooms for positive ID. I just liked the defined markings and the deep color.

I am jealous of those who can plant these outdoors year around and enjoy them. Lucky you! Drooling

I've this bromeliad....name of 'Merlot' but I am not sure of the genus and species. It's setting seed and I would be happy to send seed to anyone who would send me a SASE - Self Addressed Stamped Envelope. Off right now to cover each 'branch' with stockings!

Carol, the maroon folliage is wonderful. Does this bromeliad propagate by offsets and well as seeding? What's the flower(s) like? Most of the flower spike is out of the pic. I would love to have some seed from her and will get the SASE in the mail to you. I have never seen any of my bromeliads produce seeds but perhaps the 'Marbled Rainbow' has and I just never noticed. I need to watch for that this spring and summer. Ken in Mississippi

Carol, I think your Bromeliad is Alcantarea 'Merlot'
Just remember - when it blooms and sets seeds, the mother plant dies.
Alcantarea usually have grass-like pups at the base of the mother plants although when it is dying it may produce a few larger offsets.

I have several bromeliads I'm growing out, and added about 12 or 15 more this spring so far. Here's one I've had for about 2 years. It's fairly large, probably close to 3' from the lip of the pot. Thumb of 2013-03-28/Carter/76298b

I was playing around with my new macro lens a few weeks ago and took these flower close ups of my bilbergia (not sure of the variety, but fairly common, I'm sure).

Beautiful blooms Carter. Is that possibly Billbergia Windii? I have that plant but it has not bloomed yet. http://fcbs.org/cgi-bin/dbman/db.cgi?db=photo&uid=default&ph...
And your large brom is cool. Nice to know you can keep it potted too regardless of size.

Carol ~ that is beautiful color on your Merlot. I did some research and was amazed at how huge it can grow. The Hawaiian site that had the info also said it will live a long time after blooming. Very pretty.

As I said, I am envious of all who can grow these outdoors year around.
