Several years ago I got what I thought was a yellow mandevilla, but found out it is an allamanda. When it slowed down, I repotted it — clean pot, new soil. Unfortunately we got an early unexpected downpour (weather forecasters, ugh!) when I wasn't home and it got drenched and got root rot. I then repotted it again but it is struggling. It is down to wood and I have cut it back. When I cut it back the wood is green, so there is still hope. It is generally a sun loving plant and my question is should I keep it in the shade while it is trying to recover or leave it in the sun. I love this plant and cannot find them anywhere in Santa Monica.

Hi! Gamehensm, welcome to NGA, Allamandas can grow as a very big bush. The container yours is in is too small for it. Maybe giving it a bigger container will help. But wait until it recovers from the recent transplant. And yes keep it in the shade while recovering from the root rot. Allamandas will survive almost anything except for wet feet.

Hi Kevalsha, Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, we recently visited friends in Florida and they have a very large allamanda bush — tree almost! I was very jealous. I agree about the wet feet — had I known it was going to rain I would have moved it. About the root ball — when I repotted it, it was relatively small compared to the pot so I don't think that was an issue. When it started failing I thought it was a fungus, thus the clean pot and soil.🙏🏻
