I can't find any pictures online that look like the problem I'm having with my 8 year old ponytail palm, actually two plants together. It has done really well and has been my pride and joy but this morning I noticed a patch of leaves near the top of one of the plants that have brown spots on them. I have no idea what it is or what to do about it. The plant has always been indoors. Can you help?? The lighting is responsible for the yellow color of leaves in the picture of the whole plant. Thanks in advance.

Can you tell us first how often you water it and if the container is a cache pot, if not, does it have drain holes?

The plant is in a large plastic pot. It was repotted about 6 months ago with regular potting soil and the previous pot was also plastic. Both have multiple drain holes in the bottom. I water plants weekly, but use a soil moisture meter and only water when dry. The meter does not go clear to the bottom of this large pot, however.

Was it rotated after facing a different way for a long time?

Yes, I rotate it regularly, but recently moved it. That's when I noticed the brown in the leaves. That side had been facing toward the window but not in direct sun.

I think those spots are burned spots. Nothing to worry about.

I would suggest, scale down watering a bit more, since it is being grown indoors.

Normally those leaves can easily take direct sun even at triple digit heat. I am a bit wary with the yellowish color of the other leaves as well. It is a very drought tolerant plant, and with such slow growing tendency, so its reaction is also slow. I feel it is slowly manifesting overwatering issues, so try to lessen watering a bit.

Could be but if it was just faded from low light and got a little burned from being moved to a more sunny spot, that's not a water issue. If that is what happened, it just couldn't adjust quickly enough to avoid being a little burned on a couple of leaves.

Surviving a drought would yield a plant that looks like it survived a drought. Nothing wrong with that if one is curious and wants to observe how little water one can survive. If one wants a pampered specimen appearance, with lots of perky foliage that is upright at the top and doesn't look like it's melting down the trunk, a drought is not part of the plan.
