While moving my plants into the greenhouse this past weekend, I noticed some of the leaves on this plant looked bad. They had dark, soft spots with a hole in the leaf.

On closer inspection I noticed a single small bulb forming on each leaf. Where those had formed and dropped off onto the soil was where the hole was left in the leaf.

I think this plant label was generic.
Drimiopsis kirkii, D. Botryoides, Ledebouria kirkii Dwarf Ledebouria, Scilla, Squill

I have a variety of these types of bulb but had never seen this type of bulb formation before. Any thoughts?

You can grow Drimiopsis/Ledebouria (I think all the same plant) from leaf cuttings. The new plantlets grow on the cut edge of the leaf. Usually, one cut edge in soil and plantlets on the other cut edge. Your happy plants took a short cut.

Interesting. I did not know that. I will have to give that a try. Thank you.

The different types I have form bulbils on the bulbs.

I had a hectic summer so don't recall this plant blooming but it may have done so.

I moved my chair where I sit outside and mess with plants & I think one or more dropped Ledebouria leaves have propagated themselves under there. I can't think of anything else that would match the shape & texture of those particular leaves found under where my chair was.

Don't you just love free plants!

I've found some of the drimias growing between the cracks in the bricks. I have also found they overwinter in the ground here!

I think these have grown from bits of leaves that I would have trimmed off of plants, thinking they weren't pretty anymore and dropped them on the ground to compost in place. Part of my plan to improve the soil there while waiting for the overall porch plan to manifest, moving the seating area to the other end. Now I'm curious if these are in enough sun to bloom. I've always thought they needed more, so I'll be watching to see what happens. This is good spot for micro plants, protected from falling leaves, but not very sunny because of the root overhead.

From my experience, I don't believe they are 'light' needy. I have mine sitting in the back of a shade cloth covered shelter. They get dappled morning sun only.

I also think the blooms are related to seasons. Some of the different types bloom in winter while in the greenhouse.

Interesting, thank you. : ) When I leave them outside, they bloom April-May. L. kirkii is all I have left. I also had L. socialis but not sure what happened to it.

L. Socialis is the most difficult one for me as well. I've lost a couple in years past ร nd noticed the one I currently have appears to be struggling.

Here is a piece of the main plant. It blooms but I really can't remember what time of year. The flowers are not memorable. Smiling Its on shelf #2 south facing.

Down on shelf #3, apparently it does go to seed but these little volunteer communities are really tall and have not bloomed.

Cool.

Do you have it growing in a community pot with other types of plants?

Are the bright green leaves on the left immature L. socialis?

Looking at yours makes me realize I need to do something with mine tomorrow. Thank you

I miss those leaves! Those look great, so cute. : )

The lime colored one barely has any spots.

I think the lime leaves are the green colored Ledebouria. I bought 2 pots a million years ago, 1 green and 1 spotty and planted them in the same pot. There are also green volunteers on the 3rd bench. Flowers all look the same.

There's only Ledebouria in the original pot but they are popping up in other places.

I got mine as L. socialis and L. kirkii. I didn't see any difference in the blooms either.

I never saw any ripe seeds, but if I did, then I might start to wonder. The kirkii seemed to multiply bulbs MUCH MORE QUICKLY than the spotty ones. But it could have just been whatever weirdness I was subjecting them too.

The seeds must be like dust. I never see them either but those plants in pots on lower shelves tells me there are seeds floating around.
