This photo really illustrates to me the natural way of ,how orchids live in trees. So, that is how their roots anchor themselves and why bark is used as medium for orchids in pots... I've never seen photo of how their natural habitat rooting would be... |

Yes Bev, that is one of the epiphytic type orchids, growing on a piece of wood; it attached it's roots to the bark where it grew happily. Some orchids are terrestrial though and will grow in soil, for instance: "Nuns Cap Orchid": http://garden.org/plants/searc...
