I cut I ne, seems ro confirm. I just can't bear cutting them all off and losing more than half the young bush. Maybe it can live with borers and give me smaller yield. I'll prune the side branches in spring ro limit the load.

Sallyg Can you spray the berry canes with horticultural oil to smother the larvae?
Or a home made combo spray . Vinegar, soap, oil mixture and cover each area with suran wrap / baggie to seal the lil beggars in…?

I kind of like the idea of 'sealing their fate' so to speak. Hilarious!

I pruned off one more cane after leafing out, that cane was clearly failing above the borers gall. The rest of the canes look ok for leaves. It's bloomed now.
Reading about the borers, I'm still mixed about how I want to treat, or not. If I'd pruned off all those canes, I'd barely be getting any berries. Predation 'should' be a big help on this pest, so since this is a new bush, maybe natural controls will come in and help (as it apparently did with asparagus beetles.)
Like your suggestion, I might put some clear tape on the canes and see if I can trap them.

And I'll see how harvest goes with borer damage on the bush. If I get a lot of berries, I may decide either: - prune heavily, have a year next of few berries, or - don't prune because the bush can bear well despite them.
Plant it and they will come.

rather, if I can wrap the canes from the ground up, then the adults also can't lay eggs? masking/painters tape? Shrug!
Plant it and they will come.

I never got around to any of my ideas or any pruning and am getting lots of nice berries for my first season on this bush. Glad I did not chop all the canes off.

And for summer 2024, I did not see any cane borer- swellings or damage- it was a terribly unproductive year all around my garden, including blackberries.
Plant it and they will come.
