I pruned off one more cane after leafing out, that cane was clearly failing above the borers gall. The rest of the canes look ok for leaves. It's bloomed now.
Reading about the borers, I'm still mixed about how I want to treat, or not. If I'd pruned off all those canes, I'd barely be getting any berries. Predation 'should' be a big help on this pest, so since this is a new bush, maybe natural controls will come in and help (as it apparently did with asparagus beetles.)
Like your suggestion, I might put some clear tape on the canes and see if I can trap them.
And I'll see how harvest goes with borer damage on the bush. If I get a lot of berries, I may decide either: - prune heavily, have a year next of few berries, or - don't prune because the bush can bear well despite them.
