Thanks for the info. I might have fun with a light level phone ap.

Yep, what you describe is what all of us are constantly playing with for our potted plants. I think few people use light meters to do it, but it would add another fun aspect to the considerations. When I move over 100 pots inside for winter, then outside again for summer, there is always a lot of drama.

I've never put a light meter where I have my Pothos growing. It started as an experiment to see if it would grow deep in the kitchen.
I have a sliding glass door to my deck which is south facing.
It has been growing great in this location. It has been here over 3 years now.
What I'm curious to see, I just painted the room. It use to be a light yellow which made the room brighter and probably reflected the light more. I wonder if I see any changes.

From the photos it looks like you have a decent amount of light for plants like Pothos. I guess you'd have anywhere between 600 Lux to 1000 LUX in that area, possibly more.

I'm going to do an experiment growing some date palms from store bought dates and see how they do in lower light.

I grew a phoenix palm years back from seed and it did quite well in my kitchen but it got too big for the space it was in, so it was moved outside so maybe its possible a date palm might do well.

I'm going to re-do my Pothos plant in the kitchen... well replace it with another because whats happened is that there is barely any growth coming out of the pot the stems are sparse and the lash growth are at mid way of the pothos stems, I do have lighting at the top of about 1000 LUX so its not a light issue. I may move that one outside because I have way to much Pothos now in the kitchen and its growing everywhere. I got lots of cuttings from the last time I tidied up this Pothos plant, its growing quite quickly.

I'm doing some experiments with some of the Pothos to see if it can survive outside in the winter temperatures and if it does I'm going to have it running down the outside walls.

As for my other Pothos plants I will have to keep them trimmed regularly.

Do you get freezing temps? I thought London was in a higher zone than 6.

Today while out exploring, I found a type of Hedera Helix but the unusual thing about it was that it was growing inside a dark tunnel and growing reasonably well so I decided to take some cuttings to propagate at home. Normally Hedera Helix requires medium to very bright light. I'm pretty sure my kitchen is brighter than that tunnel, next time I will bring my light meter with me to see how dark the tunnel really is. Hopefully I should be able to get some roots soon. This will do well in my kitchen.

London can get freezing temps but they rarely go below zero and its mostly mild here in London. Spider plants seem to thrive outdoors all year around and some people have banana plants that survive many winters.

Its possible Pothos could survive it be interesting to find out.

It sounds like your zone is warmer than mine, if you are referring to zero as 32F. Pothos survives here, but not evergreen, and the non-blooming bananas also survive but are also not evergreen.

Spider plants are a horrible weed here.

So many people try H. helix inside and give up because of spider mites. Maybe you'll have better results. I hope so!
