Fruiting shrubs are a great addition to the edibles landscape. I grow many different fruiting shrubs. Lets start a discussion on our favorite fruiting shrubs.

The Goumi are starting to get ripe. These fruits are plentiful on lovely medium size shrubs. Very tart, you can eat them fresh only when fully ripe, otherwise too tart even for my taste. But for people that make jams or jellies these are fabulous shrubs. Beautiful looking shrubs too. Mine are in the front yard. Whatch out though, the backyard birds love the fruit also. Fruit pictured is not quite ripe yet but soon.

Another shrub fruit I just love are red currants. My mom used to grow red currants when I was a kid and I would go and eat them right off the shrubs when ripe. Mom would pick and make a sort of jelly. I still grow the red currants today.

Here is a view showing the tops of the red currant shrubs that grow near some white shrub roses. That is my old cherry tree trunk in the picture. Just shows you can mix edibles and ornamentals.

Oh yumm, blackberries. I love blackberries have some in my own yard. And blueberries too.

My blueberries have started getting ripe and I have been picking off the shrubs are eating them right out in the garden. Same for the red currants. They have started getting ripe too and I picked and ate a bunch of them already.

I've never had fresh currants. Just the dried ones in scones.

We also planted a pomegranate tree this year. It has small fruit so I will be anxious to try it.

We don't sell any fruit at market, except when I had some extra strawberries. We usually just eat it all fresh. I'd like to make some jam but we never seem to have enough fruit.

Oh, we have muscadine grapes too, and peaches and plums and pecàns, black walnuts and English walnuts.

To me they are delicious. I have lots of red currant shrubs and they are really, really loaded with fruit this year.

June berries have to be my favorite , it has a nice white bloom early in the spring then tasty berries . I eat them when ever I am in the garden if I can beat the birds to them . Dried they are a good substitute for currents in scones , but mine usually end up in granola.

Well it has a whole bunch of common names like saskatoon berry, shadblow, serviceberry , or sarvisberry, my Mom calls them indian berries. Seems every area has their own name ,I guess that is why we need scientific names Smiling

Real name Amelanchier

Serviceberries. We call them Serviceberries around here. I have lots of them in my garden. Taste like really bland Blueberries to me. The backyard birds love them. Always birds in those shrubs eating when the berries are ripe.

Cedar waxwings eat them before they get ripe here. I would have to put netting over them or something. Never see waxwings any other time.

I have seen the waxwings do that . They send a scout every day and then one day the whole family (20-30) show up and wipe the bush clean. Very interesting birds, and like you I almost never see them any other time.

Waxwings are such lovely birds. The waxwings usually show up here to eat the Goumi berries but I haven't seen them this year.

Blueberries are getting ripe here. Everyday including today, I go out in the backyard and pick berries and just eat them as I go along. They never manage to make it into the house.

Serviceberries are favorite of birds here.....they are OK when they are very ripe, but I don't think they have nearly the flavor of other berries. Funny to watch the birds fighting over the berries, and they strip our large shrubs bare in just a few days. I much prefer raspberries (my favorite) or blackberries. Not a huge blueberry lover.

I'm really intrigued by elderberries (2013 herb of the year). I thought it was interesting they can't be eaten fresh (are poisonous), but can eat the flowers or dried berries. Our local herb society, at their annual seminar, did some recipes with elderberries and they were delicious (used dried elderberries). There is also a fascinating lore about the shrub and it's wood. Elderberry is not nearly aS popular here in the states as it is in Europe.

My Mom has made fresh peach and elderberry pie (the 2 fruits together in one pie) every summer all my life. It's really good! One of my aunts that has now passed away used to make pie with just elderberries. She used to mke elderberry jelly too, which I loved. Not enough elderberry bushes on my property to harvest that many berries.
