Many of us will move gradually from summer mode to winter mode this month. This will be the month of clean-up chores in the garden and preparation for next year's garden. My mandevillas came inside a week ago when frost started appearing in the garden in the mornings.

Our rainy season will start soon, making the weeds easier to pull, but also providing the moisture for a whole new crop of weeds. A mixed blessing. I'll start pruning the roses in my garden this month. That sounds industrious for someone who hasn't had the strength or dexterity to use loppers for a few years now. Actually, I'll be doing a lot of pointing and my gardener will be doing the real work. I used to wait until December for pruning and clean-up, but I feel the cold more acutely these days and prefer to stay inside when the temperature dips below 60 degrees.

November is National Pepper Month. The thumbnail photo for this thread is of 'Cayenne,' a Warriner hybrid tea introduced almost 60 years ago.

zuzu, I am so glad that you are in California and have a mild Winter! Smiling I hate cold weather.

November is always a busy month for us. I'm planning to remove the top layer of soil and thoroughly clean the area around the bushes to minimize the potential midges present next year. I also need to prune the rose bushes (I find this activity enjoyable) and add some new soil/compost around the buds. I'm still contemplating whether to use compost, as I don't want any vegetation to grow in case of a warm winter. Any input is welcome!

I've also decided to cancel my order with Garden Roses LLC for DA roses. They have spotted lanternflies in their vicinity, and I don't want to introduce more pests into my garden.

Today is National Cinnamon Day

This past weekend I did some proactive clean-up by cutting back some of the hundreds of perennials that die back to the ground every winter. Some of them are already declining, and others (such as the hostas) will take a hit from this week's first frosts. This way I'll have less clean-up later in the month when it's colder, and less to clean up next April. Although I've lived in New York and New Jersey for more than half my life, I was born and raised in the south, and do not like cold weather at all. Like Zuzu, that means avoiding work in the garden when it's below 60 degrees - I consider that the tipping point between working outdoors and staying inside.

Even though I grew up on Massachusetts, I really hate cold weather. I was much happier working outside in the 100 degree heat this summer than the current 40s. Last week I did a major rose clean-up and filled my large garden cart heaping full four times with dead rose canes. It was a harder summer for the roses than 2011 when the drought lasted longer but the temperatures were more normal. Next week is supposed to be in the 70s and 80s - great gardening weather!

I'm opposite of you, Zuzu and Mike. I hate hot weather, especially, when it's humid, which, it usually is here when the temps go above 80. I love fall the best and enjoy winter, even the snow as long as I don't have to drive it in.
I did some pruning today and am hoping for the best. I didn't take a lot off, just stems that were overly long.

We will have another very warm week . I definitely need to delay with stop deadheading blooms. Lot of my roses developing a new growth on non-deadheading canes. (Hope I am not messed up saying what I meant this time). nodding

I love bringing roses in the house. They look so pretty in vases, so, I have deadheaded far too long into the fall. I should have known better. Confused

Dear Santa,

I have tried to be really good this year Rolling my eyes. so please don't bring me a sac of coal. Instead, I would like one of all the fabulous roses that are pictured here on the NGA site and to be able to make them thrive where I reside. Thank you Santa, see what you can do and, first and foremost, please bring peace to the earth.
