Binged watched the rest of, "Mr Bates vs Post Office."
One could wonder how this situation could occur.
Over 500 small Post Office managers were accused of theft or false accounting. But they only represented about 1% of the total employed in this position.
But these weren't fly-by-night computer hackers. Many were getting on in years and the Post Office they ran, was often their home.
My son-in-law, is an IT contractor, has been decades, put me in the picture a long time ago. Go back thirty years to the infancy of IT and you got the situation where you had managers of divisions of different businesses who had IT "thrust upon them." Many of them with very little knowledge of IT and often needing outside help.
I would imagine, Fujitsu, the suppliers of the faulty Horizon system, blinded the powers that be of the Post Office with science.
However, instead of getting outside help, the management of the Post Office didn't question the supplier and told lie after lie in an attempt to make the prosecutions stick.
The sad thing is that although all those who were falsely accused have
been exonerated and convictions quashed, 18 have died before receiving any compensation. In the middle of all this scandal, Chief Executive Paula Vennells received the CBE, "for services to the Post Office."
So far, none of the Post Office management have been charged. There is still an ongoing government enquiry, it's all been dragged out for over a decade.
I thought the programme was very well done. No over the top dramatics or stupid loud background music,.
