From front to back: purple nicotiana, Aster 'Purple Dome', Aster 'Crimson Brocade', Gaura 'Pink Cloud'. Next to the gaura is another aster that is a really late bloomer. I'm hoping to have an overlap of bloom times, as that aster (Raydon's Favorite), will add another purple layer behind what is blooming now. ![]() Cubits: Gardening in Tennessee ~Landscape Design Articles ~ Cubit Broker - get your Cubit News here! Notice that with all these late summer/ early fall combos, we haven't even gotten to the fall foliage color yet? Fall isn't just about leaf watching. You can have amazing blooms right up to frost by choosing the right mix of plants. Cubits: Gardening in Tennessee ~Landscape Design Articles ~ Cubit Broker - get your Cubit News here! So how close do you plant the different plants. I would love to introduce some combinations such as yours but not sure how close to put them. Of course I assume it depends on the size of each plant when grown, or do they sort of grow together in a blend. |

Wow, Steve, that's gorgeous! I never would have thought about planting petunias with my hostas. I'm actually thinking about planting some alliums with my hostas. I was inspired by this image: http://awaytogarden.com/wp-con... |

I thought hosta needed shade, but petunias and alliums are sun loving. How does that work? |

Why did I come here? I am just thrilled to see those lovely combinations. |

Steve, that really is a nice combination. So there are some sun loving hostas? A neighbor on the court behind us has the most beautiful hostas, I've ever seen. We are prone for nightly buffets by Bambi and friends here and she sprays hers almost daily with Liquid Fence. She gifted me on Easter with a hosta plant of my own. I've potted it up in a larger pot and have it on our breezeway/patio so I can keep an eye on it better as I go in/out of the garage a lot during the day. The breezeway/patio is between house and garage. I can tell it has already grown since I repotted it. I don't recall the variety of it without going outside to look at the tag, which I hope is still there. Thanks for sharing your picture. |
