My son was told that it is a hibiscus.

He purchased seeds few years ago and just now beginning to bloom. It is a huge plant.

Hibiscus was my first thought too, did a Google Lens search to come up with an idea which one and Hibiscus tiliaceus (a synonym now) seems the best match, here's our database entry, yes, huge is an understatement! Blinking

The leaves looks like smaller, fuzzy, and more round. I think that is a Hamabo (Talipariti hamabo). Use to be Hibiscus hamabo, It is in the same genus with Sea Hibiscus, more cold tolerant than other Hibiscus including Sea Hibiscus

Talipariti tiliaceum syn Hibiscus tiliaceus....common name sea hibiscus.

Oh my goodness! That's a humongous one you posted! @silversurfer
I do like the sunny yellow blooms.

I'm going to have to chop it down to size and maybe move it to another location.
