Can someone identify this tree in my sons's backyard? The iPhone says it is a poplar tree.

Just looking at the leaves, first thought was some sort of pear. But the photo of the whole tree looks like a cottonwood. Did it bloom? Have catkins? Fluff?

No, I've not seen any blooms nor catkins.
The iPhone identified it as either pear or cottonwood.
My son is concerned about the health of the tree.
Here are photos of the root system:
This is one side:

Looks like something dug into the bottom of the roots.
And the opposite side:

This is where one of the limbs broke off:

What should we do?

I would clean up the cut leaving it smooth so that water will not accumulate. I don't know that there is anything you can do about the damage at the bottom - perhaps a little trench to guide water away form the holes.

That is a good example of a tree that should be taken down before it falls on a fence, house, or a person.

It may be the only shade in the yard...

Do you think something dug the holes and has taken up residence?

Is there a hole going into the center tree from the broken off branch?
