I've had a peony for for years and it always produces 2 or 3 flowers each year. For the last 3 years I've had no flowers though the plant appears healthy, the buds appear to brown and dead this year too though the plant is still strong by the look of it

How's the weather?

Shade?

Peonies are hit or miss here too.

They plant has been strong for forty years so it must like it where it is, the weather is normal especially when it's averaged over the last three years since the problem began. The buds are brown and dead and I wonder if the problem is disease?

If you search disease, you'll see pictures of unhealthy foliage.

I suspect that your plant is otherwise healthy, and non-flowering is environmental.... same as here...
I have some peonies in town that bloomed beautifully 3 years ago... and nothing since... and before that year of bloom?

Nothing much... Plants have been in same spot for 20+ years...

Thanks for the info, I've been up and cut off all the leaves that have damage (about a quarter of them I guess) and removed the dead brown buds. I'll keep a good eye on the plant now and fingers crossed for next year. There is another bud emerging from the ground alongside the main plant so I'll watch that one carefully and maybe get some fungicide.

Dig it up in the fall and divide.it needs to be rejuvenated.

This is what it may look like(this is only about 5 years old). I had to move it to a better location.

Thanks for the feedback, it has been in the same place for a long time, we bought the house in the early 1980's and it was in the garden then. It's never grown very much larger usually producing 2 or 3 flowers as a rule though maybe one or two more on odd occasions, it's just suddenly stopped over the last three years. The buds die off and some of the leaves are damaged so I suspect a disease from the feedback I've had. I've cut off all the affected areas and will treat with fungicide then possibly try dividing too as you suggest.
