Thread OP

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum. I found it as I was looking for a place where people who love (house)plants can talk to each other. I am excited to have people to talk to about one of my favorite hobbies.

I would call myself a "chaos garderner". Grin I love plants, both in and outside ones, but I am not one for following "the rules" in how to keep them. Sometimes this aproach works out well, other times not so much Rolling my eyes.

But I do try my best.

I have included a picture of my current favorite "baby". It is about 2 years old. I believe it is called a Coleus. English is not my first language, so if I make mistakes in plant names and such, feel free to correct me, I am here to learn.

I am looking forward to learning from you all and having conversations about plants.

Please, if you are willing, share your favorite plant, wether you own it or not, and why it is your favorite plant. Thank you so much for having me.

Hi & welcome, Conri! : ) You did come to the right place. That is exactly what we do here.

I think it's incredible that you have a Coleus that is so old! Wow! It is a pretty one too.

Picking a favorite is too hard, I can't do it. Chaos gardening probably describes what is going on at my house too. Trying to landscape by propagation and using trimmings from "houseplants" in the landscape during the warm part of the year.

You don't need my invitation to do it, but please know that you are welcome to "jump into" any of the existing conversations here if the subject is one that interests you.

Welcome!
That is a beautiful coleus! I don't have that much luck with indoor Coleus.
Yes, please jump in wherever in the forum.
My favorite, if I had to grab one and run (ok, jog) out of a burning building, would be my ponytail palm, as I think it's taken the most time to grow to it's current phase, and is really easy for me. Picture later.
I have about 20 pots just on the deck here, more than one species per some pots, but maybe close to 20 species just there. Then there is my potting bench area. Then some hung in the trees. Then about 20 more pots at work. I think plants are my hobby, too.
Plant it and they will come.

@jvdubb thank you!

@purpleinopp yeah, that sounds like my type of gardening. In the garden outside I mostly grow herbs as I love learning about the medicinal value of them, but in reality I just throw some seeds in dirt and plant some plants and see what sticks. Whatever doesn't work, I'll try again next year.

@sallyg yeah, I think you can safely assume plants are your hobby too. It sounds like paradise quite honestly

Thank you all for your welcoming words and responses.

@sallyg it is gorgeous plant! So full and green. I can understand why that one would be your favorite.

One of my favorite plants, Grenovia or sometimes called mountain rose
It is an active winter growing succulent:

But it is also prettier when it starts going dormant, once temps warm-up, and looks like a nice green rose bud when fully dormant in Summer to late Fall:

I decided to bring it indoors yesterday, since we have terrible heatwave days on hand. At least I can see it safely hiding indoors while dormant:

Adenium obesum is another garden favorite, this one actively growing in summer, the hotter, the better, can take as much full sun it can get, no problem with our very dry heat wave days. I like the caudex it forms, and in late Spring to early summer it makes lovely blooms.

When temps starts going below 50F in late Fall, this plant is brought indoors and overwintered. I allow it to go dormant at that time. It goes outdoors again in mid to late Spring once overnight temps shows stable temps 50F and higher.

Welcome! Plants are one of my hobbies but also they are my children! I never wanted to have kids but always loved gardening. I love carnivorous plants and Streptocarpus the most at the moment. I also have a few begonia and orchids and I'm a new Adenium grower as well.

Some small pots. The spiky foliage @ the top is from a Yucca behind, in a big pot bolted to a stump.

Hope things are still going well, @Conri ! This is the hardest part of the year for me, trying to water often enough so that nothing dies in the heat.

@TommyRan would love to see your Begonias & orchids if you get some time to take some pics.

Here's an Autumn Ember begonia and an orchid primulinum that finally bloomed for me this spring after 8 years of doing nothing but making canes. I only have the Autumn Enber begonia to show right now, I do have a begonia dregei but have to take a photo of it later.

Agreed! Especially love the Begonia. Congrats on the orchid bloom! I know that same feeling of waiting for a lot of years for a plant to bloom and the excitement when it does.

What is visible of your gardens behind looks lovely too. : )
