Just found them on my tweedias which are going to seed.
From a distance, I thought they were lady bugs, but
close up realized they are some sort of sucking insect.
We're 20 mi inland & 30mi north of San Diego, Ca.

Maybe large milkweed bug? Check the smaller ones in the images at these sites, looks like yours.

Here are more pics I found after going to the links you
listed. I had seen them on plants at my sister's home
last year, but never here until now. Like giant aphids. Sticking tongue out
They're creepy!

They do look creepy! And I found it really odd how at various sizes their coloring can be so different.
