I think where the skill comes, other than artistic, is in matching plants in regards to light and water needs.
As I'm only in my second year of gardening, I'm still grasping that. I'm noticing that just because two plants say "full sun" and "low water", one may need a bit less or more than the other. In the ground, that difference won't matter much, but in a pot, it may matter a LOT.
As for artistic, I'm used to liking my own thing versus what is popular, so I'm OK with choosing my own.
I do have a rectangular planter on legs that is 15*30 (10 inches tall). I'm going to try putting a prostrate emu bush and a correa pulchella 'pink eyre' in it. They'll bloom in different seasons providing a longer range of colors.
