It's been, what, a couple of years now since Paul Owen sold his Slightly Different Nursery? I'm just curious to know who bought it, what are they doing with Owen cultivars, what is their new website...

It's surprising they didn't at least post a link to their new website on the Slightly Different Nursery website. I checked maybe 5 or 6 times over the year following the sale and the old website was never updated, that I saw.

I think Paul's cultivars have a pretty decent reputation, and possibly numerous buyers that would follow them and buy, so it just seems like the new owners would have attempted to provide a link for those customers to their new website...

On the other hand, it is possible the new owners want a clean break from Paul. They don't want to be known in the daylily world as Paul Owen cultivars, the sequel. They want to be themselves, producing their own cultivars and own reputation... I could understand that. Either way, I'm curious to know if there is a website for the new owners!

The person who bought the property was not a daylily person with an interest in hybridizing and carrying Paul's program forward, but the gardens are still being maintained as a private garden. I keep hoping that Paul will some day come home and pick up where he left off!

Sorry to hear that his hybridizing program won't be continued. I only have four of Paul's intros, but love each one.

Dennis, that picture of Big Beautiful Babe is stunning!

I miss the ATP Series featuring the hybridizers. It ended before Paul Owen could be featured, but think it would be cool to have a thread with pictures of the dl's we have of his.

Paul and his partner sold their nursery and moved to Panama several years ago. Regrettably, David, Paul's partner, passed away about a year ago. I don't know if this will affect whether Paul decides to move back to the US or not. Paul is close to his family, and still visits them from time to time, but I've heard nothing indicating he's considering moving back here. He has a beautiful place in the mountains in a tropical climate, what's not to like?

I only ever talked to Paul through E-mails, but he was always friendly. I miss his wit!

Somewhere along the line, daylilies have become a part of me, so I doubt that I will ever have the will power to leave them behind 'voluntarily', but tropicals might be a good second choice. If I were to retire to anyplace where "paradise" might describe it, that would certainly be my luck to where I would just kick the bucket before ever getting to absorb it.... Sorry to hear about David. Crying

Wow, some surprising information about Paul and the nursery-- thanks for the posts!

What's probably the biggest disappointment for me is that Paul undoubtedly had numerous quality seedlings under development that will apparently never be further developed or introduced...

His plants have done well for me too. Wasn't his place used for a wedding venue?

Some people are just not into flower gardening. A local farm nursery that specialized in peonies was sold to a crop farmer and instead of having a sale, they used Roundup on rows and rows of beautiful plants!!
That place held fond memories for me because my late sister and I would go visit during the bloom season.
