Recently while lying in my hammock, thinking about all the work that needs to be done, I heard a creaking noise, then a sudden crack and down I went. Last thing I remembered I saw half of my 4x4 support flying toward me. It fell harmlessly to the ground at my feet, but my back took a shot after landing on the sun baked soil below. I've recovered from that but determined a 4x4 wooden post was not enough. In fact, this is the third 4x4 that has failed over the years. The first redwood 4x4 rotted away, the second redwood 4x4 broke, but did it in a way that was almost polite. The last one, a pressure treated 4x4, broke catastrophically, but it had made some cracking noises that I ignored. After considering a metal pole replacement, I decided to go with a 6x6 pressure treated post. Spent a day soaking, then post holing the spot for my post. I was going to set it in concrete but decided to just add copper wood preservative to the pressure treated post. Set it in the ground, installed my supports, and hung the hammock. Now I can get back to procrastinating.

Ouch, Terra - glad you're okay! (I'm picturing getting clobbered by the post as it fell down...)

Maybe something like this would be a better option (site chosen randomly, I have no knowledge or opinion about this particular company)

I almost replied with the same suggestion, but figured that you've got a new post in now, so...

I have had a hammock stand like those Weedwhacker linked for 10 years. I replaced the fabric hammock early last year, but the stand remains solid and unblemished. Pros: Requires shorter space than traditional hanging method and is easily moveable. Cons: needs a level surface. Also, I'm not certain how or if it works with the spreaders in the ropes.

Thanks for the tips. I considered a ground based support, but went with the other as shown. I'm still a little nervous getting into the hammock thinking it might let go unexpectedly. So far, so good. I also found out there is an Internet forum devoted to laying around in hammocks - if you can imagine that. I would think hammock loungers would be too preoccupied with snoozing to actually have a forum. https://www.hammockforums.net/...
