This Spring I bought a H. sanguineus bulb. Following the seller's instructions I planted it in a terracotta pot and kept it dry all Summer long. It may have taken a bit of rain when there was a sudden thunderstorm but it was hardly soaked.

Now temperatures have been steadily dropping for a few weeks already and, again following instructions, I have started slightly watering the pot, carefully avoiding overwatering. No signs of life yet.
Night temperatures are in the high 40s/low 50s here and highs are in the 60-65 range in the hottest days.

I am not exactly sure if I should water more, wait for cooler weather or do some other procedure to break dormancy: according to everything I have read and been told the bulb should have at least broken dormancy by now.

Any help is welcome, thanks.

Last weekend I took the courage to dig out the bulb and check it for signs of life... no more bulb existed, it had completely rotten away. Nothing remained.
Considering the care I took over the Summer to keep it warm and dry precisely to avoid rot and how much I paid for it I am not a happy camper. I could have bought a couple of Cyrtanthus hybrids for the same money and i know those may be slow to bloom but always deliver.

Lesson learned.

I was curious as I had not heard of this Haemanthus. What a pretty bloom.

I grow the H. albiflos. It blooms beginning this time of year. I would think their care would be similar. I leave mine outside in shade all summer. In this climate it is hot and dry. It catches occasional rainfall and splashes of water when other plants are watered. I would think totally deprived of moisture would cause the bulb to dehydrate as yours did.

I am sorry that did not work out for you. I must admit I would not give up on growing this bulb but I would seek different care information.
