The roadsides and other natural areas have a lot of blooming white asters in them right now (zone 7). I assume they're native (?), I really like them and have a couple in my yard. I thought they were maybe white wood aster or heath aster, but those aren't an exact match (not as bush-like as heath aster or broad-leafed as wood aster). They seem to be sun-loving, thin, and mounding. Attached are pictures of the same plant in my flowerbed. And species IDs ?

Sorry for the amount of day lilies and centipede grass in the BG

Pretty sure it is not a fleabane. The inflorescence structure is not fleabane and is aster like to me.

Yes, looking at the fleabane taking over my yard, the flowers are in little bunches, not strung up and down the stem.

Exactly what I was thinking!

Plenty of autumn blooming asters here, though...

I'm fairly sure the asters I'm spotting are hairy oldfield, given their soil and sun preferences. But on the topic of asters, there's a very interesting species called Carolina climbing aster that blooms pink-ish. I mail ordered one last year but I think i killed it this season by forgetting to water it Sad

I want to start an aster garden in one of my beds but I have trouble finding natives asters, most nurseries don't sell their perennials in the fall and the asters they _do_ have are non-native and too compact for my liking.

Perhaps it might be fun to collect seeds from the roadside asters you admire and grow your own.

I don't remember where/when I got some wild asters, but they just happened, from lack of weeding. Collecting those seeds may make it easy. They would start as pretty nondescript rosettes.
Plant it and they will come.

Most states have Native plant societies and they usually have a plant sale or two during the year. Asters are notorious for producing non-viable seed. Collect at least 10x what you normally might.

Yeah, and...
Once we have volunteer asters, they tend to spread...
I get my best wildflowers by avoiding removal of plants that I can't 100% positively identify.
