Considering an addition of a few Winterberry varieties (male & female) for my Michigan, zone 4b gardens. Love the lush look of all those red berries.
Question: how quickly do the birds eat up the berries?
My experience with the mature dogwood who reside nearby now is, red berries are gone in 3 days, eaten by Cedar Wax Wings.
Thanks, everyone.

The birds will eat them quickly.

A good question. I don't know. But I suspect there might be differences between the different cultivars out there. Isn't there a yellow berried one (or two), too? I don't know what is normal, but I've seen wild ones a few miles south of the Canadian border in Minnesota at Thanksgiving time and they have their full berry complement, still. Wondering if Cedar waxwings will have migrated already before the color change.

Remember you'll want to get compatible males and females. Some don't bloom at the same time for good pollination.

The wild ones that I see up here have just recently lost their leaves so that you can identify the bushes from the road; I think the birds do eat them quite quickly, they definitely don't last all winter... and if yours were the only plants around they might be in high demand. (But, you'd be doing the birds a favor Smiling )

Haven't seen you around recently, Kathy - you must have had a busy summer!

I saw gorgeous big berry full winterberries at the college ten years ago. Maybe, the bigger and more bushes, the longer you might enjoy seeing berries.
Plant it and they will come.
