I know Mahonia is considered Berberis by many, but for the moment let's not quibble.
This mostly smooth leaved plant was in Vancouver WA (Portland OR area) and caught my eye because of lack of prickles on the leaf edges.
Does anyone know it?

There is a thornless variety of Mahonia, Anping Mahonia (Mahonia eurybracteata subsp. ganpinensis 'Soft Caress') but the leaves don't look right for that one. Your plant reminds me a lot of Rhus species.

Looks like an Ailanthus, aka tree of heaven, taking over the planter.

Rolling my eyes.
It is a Mahonia. I know Senna, Rhus, and Ailanthus, and many, many cv.s of Mahonia as they are widely used here and in the PNW.

I'm on a first name basis with Trees of Heaven. That's not one.

Definitely Mahonia/Berberis. If you look real close at the top of the center stem, you can just make out the clasping leaf-bases that eliminate all the suggested ids. I imagine the leaf texture is quite different from those too. Sorry, I don't know which species/cv. Really cool-looking though. I want one.
