San Francisco Bay area (Zone 9a)
This was spotted at the Living Desert Zoo in Palm Desert CA.
Does anyone recognize it?

It's not one of the plants listed on their native plant list. Depending on which area it is located, it could be an introduced plant or even a hybrid of some sort.

Plant ID suggests wild petunia, but that's only a 3.8% likelihood.

To me, the flowers look similar to a chilopsis a trumpet but they don't quiet fit either.

Ruellia. Either desert Ruellia or wild petunia. Maybe those are the same plant?

They are the same. The leaves don't quite look right for it from the photos I looked at, but it could just be the angle of the photo, time of day, etc.

Probably Ruellia californica. It's shrubbier and the foliage is fuzzy, unlike R. brittoniana which has glossy leaves and a more "perennial" look.

Ruellia peninsularis looks like this.
