Oh sally, those are great feeders! I bought my first one when I lived in Florida in 2009. It worked great there.

So, we have some folks visiting and I'm not sure what they are. They're about double the size of a chipping sparrow, but they have black instead of brown on their heads and they have grey chests. Some kind of sparrow?

I agree with white crowned sparrow. I get a few show up with the house sparrows. They are about the same size as the house sparrows. As CalPolygardener mentions the racing stripes on the head identify them easily from the other sparrows.
My Mom gets house sparrows. I've seen them as close as five minutes down the road. They don't seem to visit our yard for some reason. Not that I'm complaining, the cowbirds are enough of an issue.
