I've been having a problem with rodents going after various bulbs in the yard, like crocus -a favourite- and lily bulbs. I've managed to reduce the population by 2 over the past week but this one really takes the cake, sitting next to a triggered trap as if to say 'better luck next time'....This one spent the bulk of the day running around in this planter and the only time it scampered is when the dog came too close.

Anyway, I only have one 'J' and that of course is 'June' and I rather suspect there isn't any self-respecting hosta fancier who doesn't have at least one, probably more..

I sometimes refer to 'June' as a chameleon hosta: the colour changes with the amount of direct light it receives. The one in the pot was in a different part of the yard and simply moved next to the one in the ground for comparison.

In all the years that I've had it I have not seen any sporting or reversion. It sets seed readily and while I've had numerous seedlings over the years I have never seen anything special out of those worth hanging on to.
Cheers,
Pieter

'June' is indeed a chameleon. Can look like two different plants (or more) in different light conditions.
Anyway, Having posted C, D and E today, I'll wait a bit until posting more.

Today is the day I might get caught up in your alphabet.

The 'J' hostas I have include:

'Janet', July 24
A mature hosta I've had about 20 years. Occasionally I get a streaked leaf or two on this, but when I separated them once, they didn't amount to anything; so I no longer bother. The leaves get progressively whiter during the summer.

'Jewel of the Nile', July 25
Another I've had since 2005. Literally no leaf is the same on this. But it does have a tendency to revert to solid yellow ('Dee's Golden Jewel'); so I have to keep on top of that.

'Joby', June 30/ July 8/ July 16
'Joby' is the second plant I've registered. It's a 2010 seedling from 'Déja Blu' and is a nice blue. I hadn't thought of registering it, but after a friend lost her husband, she chose it from all of my seedlings as a memorial plant and 'Joby' was her husband's nickname. It's been divided a bit to share with other friends, but is doing OK. It did get somewhat smashed when the tree fell in our yard on July 15; so didn't look great for the rest of the summer.

'June'1, Aug 8
I have two divisions of 'June'. This is the original and is east of my house. Getting morning sun, it's usually more yellow than the other division, but in the last few years the difference hasn't been as noticeable. I acquired this in 2006 and have taken some divisions at times.

'June'2, July 25
This is the other division of 'June'. It's west of my garage and immediately east of the neighbour's garage. On this side of the house, the houses are quite close together.

'Justine', June 30
This was a gift in 2021 and is doing well but I need to move it in 2025 as the plant behind it just keeps getting larger.
