My first one is 'Katherine Lewis' and some may feel it should be 'Kathryn Lewis'. It's not registered, a sport of a 'Halcyon' seedling and some refer to it as an improved 'June' which I think is an overreach. No denying their common heritage though but they're quite different and IMHO 'June' is the better one. Having said that, it's right up there for me, I have several of them. Great grower, readily sets seed and I've collected several OP seedlings but so far nothing special...

I have two of them sorta either side of my carport. One's in the ground under a rhododendron and the other in a pot. The one under the rhodie is in essence in full shade, the one in the pot sees a fair amount of direct sun and as you can see below it is quite a bit brighter. It also grows faster and is more floriferous...

My other K is H. kikutii and I think it is kikutii var. caput-avis. This is from seeds collected in the wild in Japan.

One of the characteristics of this specie is that they hold the scape and flowers almost horizontally. Where it grows it is prone to copious amounts of rainfall and apparently this is done to make sure rainwater falls off the flower. It does not do well in shade and prefers a fair bit of direct sun.

There's a certain amount of maroon speckling to the petioles.

One year I saw a fair bit of serration to the leaves, quite exciting. Unfortunately however it only appeared the one year.... oh well...

Kaleidochrome (I almost lost this one after I divided and moved it. I potted it up for a year and it's still alive!)

My 'K' hostas include:

'Karin', Aug. 8
Karin is my elder daughter's name; so I had to have this one. But it has a tendency to drawstring a bit if we have a wet spring. Curiously it's a sport of 'Anne' (though I don't have an e on my name. It has looked better at times than it did in 2024.

'Katsuragawa Beni', June 30
A small plant with red petioles. Apparently useful in breeding but it blooms so late in the season that my chances of getting seeds from it are just about nil. Mine was moved and divided in 2023 and is in recovery.
Thumb of 2025-01-23/ViolaAnn/f529f8

'Kifukurin Ko Mame', June 30
This was one of my very first hostas, acquired in the 1990's when I had NO IDEA that hostas came in different sizes. It's a lovely, perky mini that is very easy to divide and makes wonderful borders of which I have several, the last one planted simply to have some to share as this one may be difficult to find.
Thumb of 2025-01-23/ViolaAnn/122dc3

'Kinbotan', June 30
Another fast-growing mini. Similar to the previous plant but the leaves aren't wavy. This would likely also make a good low border, but it's also a great ground cover.
Thumb of 2025-01-23/ViolaAnn/69af32

'Korean Snow', July 16
I've had this one since 2004 but need to move it as it frequently gets burned in early spring before the nearby tree leafs out. I had intended to dig and divide it last year, but it didn't happen and it's never been divided.
