I recently got this plant from my mom who got it from my grandmother years ago when she past. My mom knows nothing about it. Google Lens say its an Oyster Plant which sounds right, but then when I look at pictures I'm not so sure. I'm just wanting to look up info on how to care for it. The base is very skinny and weak feeling. But where it bends, it's much thicker and sturdier. Can I cut it here and replant it? I need to find a new place for it as my cat keeps eating it. Does it need a lot of direct sun or will indirect do? All the pictures I've seen of an oyster plant its much bushier, and everything says they make great ground cover. I can't imagine saying that about this pitiful thing.

hi Welcome!
Please try again with your picture. I think I can picture just what you are saying with an oyster plant, but, nice to make sure. They will grow much thinner in low light than in bright or outside light.
Plant it and they will come.

Tradescantia species and it reminds me of Tradescantia pallida. Here are a couple of photos from our database for comparison:

Is pallida fuzzy, and oyster plant smooth ? I had both last year.
Plant it and they will come.

To me it looks like Callisia fragrans. It desperately needs much more light. Cut it right below the bulge at the bend and stick it back in the pot with the original. Then put it in a very bright South or West facing window. Keep it pretty moist and it will root in a couple of weeks and a new stem will sprout from the other nodes.

It does look like T. spathacea - the "oyster plant" or "Moses in the Cradle".
Like the others, I agree it has been starved of light.

Basket Plant (Callisia fragrans) could be a possibility. I've grown both the green and variegated varieties for many years and the green type will attain purplish shades on the upper leaf surface when grown with a lot of sun but they've never had a purplish reverse. Here are a few photos from our database to compare to Callisia fragrans.

Having had all of the suggested plants, in etiolated condition, I think it looks like T. spathacea.

Thank You for all your responses! I'm going to get this in lots of light and cut/replant it at the suggested spot.❤️

Happy to try to lend some food for thought to your investigation. When moving plants into more light, they can burn easily. If you do it gradually, you can avoid that. Best luck!
