I have a really healthy red robin tree standing at its highest point at circa 12ft tall. The problem is how much it overhangs into the garden from the plant border. Can i cut back the over hanging branches ?

Yes, photonia can withstand heavy pruning. It is commonly sheared as a hedge. As a bonus you might cut off the stinky blooms!

If you remove more than a 1/3 of the plant at one time you can stress it out. I have seen these plants overpruned and end up with a disease and fungus. Just prune one time a year to keep the plants thriving.
NOT A EXPERT! Just a grow worm! I never met a plant I didn’t love.✌
